SEO or Search Engine optimization is a term that new bloggers hear but don’t know what it is or why they need it. I am here to tell you the very basics of SEO with my 5 SEO tips for beginners. Essentially the purpose of SEO is to get you noticed by search engines like Google, Firefox and even Pinterest so that people find you. Ranking higher in these search engines will drive more traffic to your site and ultimately result in more sales from your marketing efforts. While SEO serves to drive traffic to your site, traffic alone is not enough.


It must be the right kind of traffic. You want readers that are engaged in your content and are on your site for the right reasons and not just because some key words pop up. In other words you want the traffic to convert to sales. If your audience is engaged the likelihood of sales goes up and so does your conversion rate. The second of my 5 tips is to find the right keywords that will attract audience members who are engaged enough to result in conversions. You need to be including the keywords that will bring in the type of reader that you want. These keywords should be sprinkled throughout your content without being overly sweet. How do you find keywords that are going to work for you and your content?


Search for them. You want to find keywords that people are looking for but have a small amount of competition. There are many free tools out there that will help you to find keywords. Where should you put these keywords? There are 4 primary places to put these keywords. The first should be in your blog post title, meta description, subheadings and images. They should also be sprinkled into your post but in a way that is readable. You do not want to just have a post filled with keywords because no one will read it. The long tail key word is now considered the best way to get higher rankings in SEO.


The Long Tail keyword is based on the notion that many low-traffic keywords taken together can drive more traffic than a few high-traffic keywords. For example instead of using the word blog throughout your post content use a phrase such as "how do you blog for money" to stand out in the crowd. Long tail keywords generally have low search volumes. This means that if you use a specific set of words as a key word and someone searches for that phrase you will rank higher in search results. Therefore, when you are researching keywords, don’t forget to consider low traffic words that can be combined for a high traffic result. Search engines automatically crawl your website to determine what it is about.


It then decides which keywords your pages should rank for. By sprinkling keywords throughout your content you can help search engines to rank you higher for those words. Keep in mind that you should still write for your readers and not for search engines. One of the ways you can do this is by using the free Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress. This plugin will help you with readability and keywords. It is not a perfect and you should still use the keyword tools listed in section 2 but it goes a long way in making SEO easier. Titles - Create a title that will draw your readers in. Keywords - Pick keywords that will bring people to your site for the right reasons. Links -Use both external and internal links when possible.


Images - Use images and describe them completely so they will be found by search engines. Meta Tags - Specifically the "meta description Tag" which describes what your site or post is about using keywords. XML Sitemap - Directs the search engine to the different pages of your site. There are free XML sitemap plugins for this. Google Webmaster Central and Bing if you want to be found. URL Structure - Keep your URL’s simple. Only numbers and letters should only be used in URLs. Alt Tags - Helps search engines index images. Search engines can not see images they can only go by the description. Google and other search engines use site speed as one of the metrics in ranking a site’s content. Site speed primarily relies on good web hosting, blog theme, and compressed Js and CSS files and many more. For this I recommend Godaddy for web hosting and Studiopress for a good fast loading theme. How to Spot Low Quality Websites? You can spend a significant amount of time on a website audit to estimate its quality. If this is you, it's entirely possible you're looking at the wrong websites. If you have to critically examine every aspect of a website, it's probably not the quality option you're looking for. Here are some tips on what you should consider while auditing a website or link provider. Most PBN and Dropped domain owners have a huge list of websites under similar IPs, where they ask for payment and accept almost whatever quality content passes the CopyScape plagiarism test. If a webmaster replies with a large list of other domains they control for you to post on, they're not the type of sites you want to be on.


Whenever you're analyzing a new website, you should review the domain's history. First, look at the domain name. Good websites usually have good and understandable domain names. Secondly, check the site's historical backlink profile with a backlink checker such as Majestic. Last, review the website itself with the Wayback Machine like in the example above. Valuable websites should have decent traffic. You want links from websites that cater to an actual audience. Of course the best way to see how a website is doing in search is to request access to Search Console and Google Analytics, but that's not often possible, so you can use SEMRush or Ahrefs.


SEMRush allows you to compare traffic change after the release of an important update of Google’s algorithms. Good websites should be visible in SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). If you didn't check the backlink profile of the website during the domain history check, you'll want to do so before you pitch a site. A good website should have a good link profile. Don't be fooled by dropped domains or a PBN, either. Again, Ahrefs is pretty good at counting live and disappeared links. Moz’s DA (Domain Authority) is also a pretty good litmus test for the authority of a given site.


One way to spot a great website is to check if Google shows sitelinks for the domain search query. With time you will be able to spot suspicious websites easily and not confuse them with young but quality websites (e.g. personal blogs) without a strong link profile. There is one more thing that you shouldn’t forget - your guest post can rank in search and give you or your brand some extra awareness and maybe even clicks, depending on the traffic amount. In it you will find resources to troubleshoot common issues and a section of FAQs that you can draw from when you are feeling a little lost. When all else fails, reach out to customer support by opening a support ticket. 2. Find the discussion board. An active community is crucial when choosing a theme for your WordPress site. Being new to WordPress means you’ve likely never seen the white screen of death or have fallen victim to a malicious hacker who has locked you out of your site.


Regularly backing up your WordPress site will ensure you can get back up and running when the day comes that you lose access, or your site breaks from some faulty plugin. 1. With any WordPress site, your goal is likely to get more traffic, more readers, or more customers. One of the best ways to do that is through optimizing your site to rank higher on Google or other search engines. This tactic is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The instructions can be found on the WordPress download page or within the plugin itself under Settings. According to Yoast, a straightforward permalink structure is ideal for SEO. Strong security for your WordPress site doesn’t need to be expensive or take a long time to set up. Your new WordPress site likely gave you a username and password and should be updated as soon as possible to thwart any hackers from using brute force attacks to gain control of your website.


Generating a secure password involves using a different password than any of your other logins and using a long string of multiple numbers, letters, and symbols. If you want a secure password quickly, you can always use a password generator to do the job for you. Update WordPress, your plugins, and your themes regularly to close any backdoors and vulnerabilities left open to hackers. Looking at the graphic below you can see that WordPress notifies you when any updates are available and makes updating as simple as clicking ‘Update’. This process can even be done in bulk for your plugins.


An aside tip would be to backup your site before making any updates. This way if your new update is faulty in any way or not compatible with your WordPress site you can simply restore the previous version and get things back to normal. Some hosting providers have solutions for automated updates that save loads of time, and eliminate worries about upgrading manually. When you’re just getting started with WordPress, you are likely doing lots of research into best practices and troubleshooting some problems you may be having. Which is great, you should absolutely be doing that. Along the way, it is almost inevitable that you will come across some article about "Must Have WordPress Plugins". While these articles may have great intentions, you should know that more plugins aren’t always better. In fact, the opposite is usually true. You should keep your plugins to a bare minimum to run your site and provide the user experience you desire. More plugins than necessary can slow down your site tremendously.


Another issue with more plugins is they come with added vulnerabilities. Any plugin that isn’t up to date has the potential to be hacked or even become faulty. Only download high-quality plugins from trusted sources who update frequently. WordPress is strong in a lot of areas but built in analytics and dashboards is not one of them. Luckily there are many plugins available that make it easy to track important things like where your traffic is coming from, how often people are first-time visitors or returning visitors, bounce rate, and much more. The universal way of tracking your website metrics is to setup an account with Google Analytics.


You can see everything you want to track on their dashboard, but a more convenient option is to download one of those plugins we spoke about before to see everything directly on your WordPress dashboard right when you log in. With any online presence, you will eventually have readers, followers, and customers reach out for a multitude of reasons.
